Wonderland

Last week, while walking through the living room just before a Phineas and Ferb episode was about to begin, I caught the tail end of a behind the scenes look at Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Nothing up to this point has so much as even slightly peeked my interest to go see this film. I will not apologize for the fact that I scare easily and what I’ve seen of this movie gives me the willies.

Somehow, this trailer hurled me back to 1985 when I watched a “made for TV” version based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. At the time, this version had me utterly confused because it was NOTHING like my beloved Disney animated cartoon. Obviously at that young age I hadn’t come to understand that before there were movies, there were books.

Now I can definitively say that in combination with my 1985 memories, the Disney animated classic and this new trailer, my interest has officially been peeked. It’s time to put the pieces of all these visual versions together. It’s time to read the book.

The only question I have now is do I read it on my own, or with my kids? Sure it’s categorized as a children’s classic but sometimes I wonder if the material is really appropriate for the very young reader especially since the visual versions can be a bit nightmarish.

Brooke wants to see the new movie, but it doesn't really look like it's for little kids. Looks a little scary to me. You'll have to let me know how it is if you see it.

"IF" I see it, it probably will not be until it is released on DVD and after I've read the book...but we'll see.

Maybe we should read this book for book club. I would be interested in reading it. I listened to the "looking glass wars" on cd and I really liked that book. I am pretty sure it was by the same author.

I actually just started reading this to the kids at bedtime. Haley listens very intently and asks losts of questions. Jerod just falls asleep very quickly. :)

Laura,

It sounds like that is all the motivation I need. I'll put it on my library request list along with the Great Divorce and A Tale of Two Cities.

Kate...I've already made my pick for Book Club, if it doesn't get snatched up before it's my turn again...I just may well do it. Maybe we should all just read it on the side and then once the movie gets to the dollar theater, we can all go see it...although the IMAX 3D may be worth the bucks...I loved Avitar.
